Dear Minister Freeland

Women all over the world depend on Canada for support.
We can’t let them down.

For over five years now, Canada has been a catalyst in putting the empowerment of women and girls at the heart of the fight against poverty. Our vision has changed the lives of millions for the better.

Today, Canada’s foreign aid funding is at a pivotal moment.

The pressures of budget deficits, the continuing impacts of COVID-19, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the threat of a global recession are all challenges that might push the federal government to reduce aid funding. Such a reduction would be a major blow to the global impact of Canadian foreign aid, one that could set it back for years to come — even decades.

NGOs are united in calling on the Canadian government to maintain its current levels of international aid funding and to commit to a predictable, three-year increase in its 2023 federal budget.

Foreign aid is not a handout. It is an investment in the type of world we all want to see. Our investments have acted as a bulwark against rising authoritarianism by supporting democracy and development in countries where rights are under threat.

At a time when women around the world need the support of Canada, we cannot afford to let them down.

Sincerely,

The Bigger Than Our Borders Campaign
